- The autonomic nervous system is composed of:
- Sympathetic nervous system: activates in response to threats
- Parasympathetic nervous system: returns us to resting state
- When sympathetic system is activated it is difficult to relate skillfully
- "Straw breath" activates parasympathetic state
- Breathe deep into belly through nose (diaphragmatic breathing)
- Breath out long, slow exhale out as though through a straw
- Allow body to physically drop/melt/relax during exhale
